December 14, 2005 Away gave vs Leavitt Hornets
Summary by Pete Blais
AUBURN — Despite some third-period heroics from senior center Sam Sheldon, the Rangers (1-1) were stung by a 7-5 loss to the Leavitt (2-0) Hornets in a Western Class B contest here Wednesday.

Sheldon scored two goals within 2:05 to pull the Rangers into a 5-5 tie early in the third period. But a Justin Rouillard tally with just under seven minutes left in the game gave the home-team Hornets a one-goal lead they expanded to a two-goal margin on an empty-net score in the closing seconds.

Greely jumped out to a 2-0 advantage on goals by seniors Tyler King and Brad Allen, although a Hornets’ score cut the lead in half with just over two minutes left in the opening period.

The Rangers likely went to the locker room feeling they should have had a bigger first-period lead considering they poured 15 shots on Leavitt netminder Richard Thibault. But Thibault kicked aside 13 of those attempts and 10 of 11 second-period Greely shots, giving his teammates a chance to pull the game even at 3-3 heading into the final frame. Junior defenseman Drew Bowden had the Rangers lone second-period goal.

Leavitt scored twice within 31 seconds in the opening minutes of the third period. But while Sheldon was able to tie the game, the Rangers were unable to get the go-ahead goal against Leavitt’s Thibault, who finished the evening with 35 saves, including several of the spectacular variety.

December 14, 2005 Away games in Canada
Summary by Pete Blais

SHERBROOKE, Quebec, Canada — The Rangers split a pair of exhibition games against Alexander Gault during the team’s annual excursion to Canada this past weekend.

The Harrison brothers, senior Sam and junior Harrison, left a lasting impression on the host Pipers by scoring six of the seven goals Greely tallied in the two contests.

Sam and Harrison scored early in the opening period to stake the Rangers to a two-goal lead in the first game held in the border town of Stanstead. But the Pipers responded with four unanswered goals to earn a 4-2 win.

In the second game, held in Lennoxville, senior Brad Allen scored a goal and the Sheldons tallied two apiece as the Rangers stormed to a 5-2 victory. Junior defenseman Tim Stevenson suffered a wrist injury and will likely miss a few games.

Thursday January 5, 2005  vs Brunswick at FIC  W 4-2

Greely downs Dragons  - Brunswick falls for first time this season with 4-2 loss to Rangers.
From the
Brunswick Times Record  01/06/2006

FALMOUTH — Sam Sheldon scored two goals and Greely High School goaltender Billy Bolduc made 36 saves as the Rangers handed Brunswick its first boys hockey loss with a 4-2 victory on Thursday.  Played at the Family Ice Center, Western Class B member Greely (4-1) opened the scoring at 6:34 of the first period on a Bryan Allyn goal (assisted by Sam Blais).   Brunswick (6-1) countered at 10:04 of the opening period on the power play. Henry Aschauer took a feed from Wes Caparratto and fired a slap shot past Bolduc. Sheldon sandwiched two goals around a Kit Smith (Josh Clark) marker in the second period for a 3-2 Rangers lead through two.In the third period, Brunswick outshot Greely 15-3, including a penalty shot by Smith at 6:17 of the period. Smith tried to force Bolduc off the left post, but the netminder didn't budge, keeping the Rangers in the lead. At 9:43, Greely forward Kevin Hart dumped the puck into the Brunswick zone. As Dragons goalie Chris Billett went behind the net, the puck caromed off the side of the boards and slid into the vacated Brunswick net.

"The first two periods we were flat, but I have to give all the credit to Greely because they came out and played with a lot of heart," said Brunswick coach Mike Routhier.

Greely topples unbeaten Dragons
By DAN HICKLING Special to the Press Herald

FALMOUTH — The little things often lead to big results. Or at least they did Thursday night for Greely, which won most of the tussles and ultimately toppled previously undefeated Brunswick 4-2 at Family Ice Arena. Sam Sheldon scored twice and Billy Bolduc made 36 saves to help the Rangers pull off the upset.
"The guys from the get-go played with a ton of heart," said Rangers Coach Barry Mothes. "They sustained it the whole game. I´m very proud of them for working so hard for three periods."

The Rangers (4-1) never trailed, although Brunswick (6-1) did tie twice. The teams swapped first-period goals, with Bryan Allyn giving the Rangers the lead at 6:34.  Moments earlier, Dragons goalie Chris Billett had stoned Harrison Sheldon, who stole the puck and skated in alone. But Billett had no chance when Allyn stood at the edge of the crease and cashed in Sam Blais´ centering feed.  Brunswick replied on a power play at 10:04 when Henry Aschauer wound up from the right point and zipped his shot past Bolduc.  Greely led 3-2 after two periods, getting a pair of goals from Sheldon sandwiched around one by Kit Smith of Brunswick.  Sheldon´s first, at 1:02, came after he stole the puck from Blaine Cardali at the blue line, then skated in alone on Billett. He finished the play with a tuck-in through Billett´s pads.  Smith made it 2-2 at 8:31, but at 11:51 with Greely on a power play, Sheldon rerouted Leland Copenhagen´s feed into the upper-right corner.

Brunswick stormed the net in the third period, outshooting the Rangers 15-3 in search of the tying goal.  But Bolduc held them off every time, making his biggest save of the night at 6:17 after Josh Clark was awarded a penalty shot.  Clark tried to draw Bolduc off the left post, but Bolduc refused to budge and fended off Clark´s backhander.  "It was an up-and-down game and (Bolduc) had to be on his toes," said Mothes. "I thought this was by far his biggest game of the year."   Freshman Kevin Hart sealed it with a harmless-looking dump-in off the glass that caromed into the net after Billett was caught out of position.

Monday Feb 13, 2006  vs Cape Elizabeth W 5-4 OT

MaineToday.com

In a big one, in overtime, it’s Greely
By RACHEL LENZI Staff Writer

Tuesday, February 14, 2006

Somehow, Leland Copenhagen skated his way through a crowd to give the Greely hockey team one of its biggest wins of the season.

Copenhagen scored a pair of goals in a 5-4 overtime win Monday over Cape Elizabeth at the Cumberland County Civic Center, and his second goal was the winner. The sophomore forward sprinted out of the penalty box, picked up a loose puck and skated into Cape Elizabeth’s zone. With 3:38 left in overtime, Copenhagen split a pair of defenders and beat Cape goalie Ryan Hatch to end the game. "Cape’s always been a huge rival," Copenhagen said. "This means we have a good advantage."

Greely’s win snapped Cape’s six-game winning streak. Both teams are 11-7. "(Greely) came out hard tonight and beat us to a lot of loose pucks," Cape Coach Jason Tremblay said. "There were a lot of loose pucks and we weren’t getting the one-on-one battles."

The Rangers and the Capers always seem to meet in pivotal games. Earlier this season, Cape won 1-0 at Family Ice Center in Falmouth. The two teams met last year in the Western Class B championship game, with Cape taking a 4-2 win on its way to the Class B title. Greely Coach Barry Mothes called Copenhagen’s overtime tally "a huge goal." "Leland just made an enormous individual effort, to skate it from the blue line and roof it high to one side," Mothes said.

The Rangers came back to tie the game in each of the first two periods before forcing overtime with a goal in the third. Harrison Sheldon tied the game at 1-1 with 16 seconds left in the first period, then Kevin Hart made it 3-3 with 49 seconds remaining in the second. After Cape Elizabeth’s Tyler King scored at 8:41 of the second, Hart intercepted a clearing attempt by the Cape defense and cut in on Hatch to tie the game. "I thought our guys showed a lot of character coming back three times," Mothes said. Tom Rich gave Cape a 4-3 lead at 4:09 of the third, picking up a loose puck in the slot and beating Greely goalie Bill Bolduc, who was out of position. But Copenhagen tied the game again at 6:36 with a shot that trickled past Hatch. In the final seconds of regulation, Greely’s Sam Sheldon stripped the puck from Cape Elizabeth’s Ryan Tremblay and broke in alone on Hatch. The crowd seemed to hold its collective breath as Sheldon bore down on Hatch, but the senior goalie turned the puck away as the horn sounded. Greely, though, needed less than five minutes of the eight-minute overtime before Copenhagen scored his second goal of the game.

In overtime, the Rangers’ plan was simple. "Just keep it in their end, and keep it out of our end," Copenhagen said. "We wanted to get as many shots as we could." Zach Juliano and Kyle Dancause each scored a goal and Hatch finished with 25 saves for Cape Elizabeth. Bolduc made 22 saves for Greely. "We have a lot of respect for Cape," Mothes said. "We knew it was going to take a strong, consistent effort to win."
