high school boys and girls skaters must sell $90 worth of ads or write a check
for $90 by Nov. 15; Jane Swan will help with the ad book graphics.
- Girls Sanctioning: Godin reported the school committee approved the
sanctioning proposal on Oct., 4 by a 6-1 vote. The committee raised some
concerns about future financial commitments.
IV. PROGRAMS
- Girls: Knight reported: 18 girls have registered, including five
freshmen and a first-year sophomore; eight skaters graduated last year and two
have chosen not to skate this season; no junior varsity program is planned; this
season's schedule includes 16 Tier I games and an additional six Tier II games
for younger players; practices begin Nov. 4; a pre-season dinner is scheduled
Oct. 28; Hawkins and Knight have met with Jack Hardy to officially apply for the
coaching jobs, which may be paid positions in future budgets; as a sanctioned
club, players will be covered under the school's insurance policy, take buses to
away games and be eligible for varsity letters; two hours of girls ice are
available to turn back to the boys high school or middle school program.
- High School Boys Varsity: Bowden reported: the team will host a
Thanksgiving tournament that will also include teams from Yarmouth, Brewer and
Deering high schools; the team will participate in the Falmouth Foreside Tourney
with Falmouth and NYA on Dec. 3-4; 19 regular-season games have been scheduled;
the regular-season opener is scheduled for Dec. 11 at Win-Dale; the junior
varsity has nine games currently scheduled, another four to five games planned
and will participate in tournaments during Christmas and February vacations; two
games and a scrimmage are scheduled for the Dec. 17-19 Sherbrooke trip;
mandatory fitness check-in is scheduled after school on Oct. 28; a parental
informational meeting is scheduled for Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. in the high school
library with $275 registration fees due at that time and parental volunteer-list
sign-ups available; skaters will leave for Sherbrooke at the end of the school
day on Dec. 17.
- Middle School: Bowden reported: Bob Stuart has volunteered to coach the "B"
team; the first practice was held Oct. 18.
V. OLD BUSINESS
- Portable Skate Sharpener: Jeff Daigle displayed the new varsity portable
skate sharpener. He reported: several adults will soon be trained to operate the
machine; the Maineiacs trainer may assist in the training; the needed vacuum
unit will likely be donated.
- Alumni Fundraiser: Bisbing and Jeff Daigle reported: several alumni
skaters and parents have expressed interest in starting the fund; funds would
help finance the scholarship and "Coach's Wish List" programs; cards will be
mailed and phone calls made informing alumni and parents about the program; the
goal is to raise $2,000 annually; Daigle and Bisbing will run the program this
year and recruit parents to take over next season.
- Clothing: Spaulding reported: Greely clothing may eventually be
posted on the team's web site; order forms will be available at the games and
eventually on the web site; Brian Gilbert will make up some T-shirts that will
be available at any time; clothing-order payments will be made directly to
Gilbert.
VI. NEW BUSINESS
- Web master: Nelson reported: rosters, schedules, clothing and pictures
will be posted on the web site; another domain with more memory may be needed to
host the site if the boosters decide to archive information; Matt Spaulding will
take photos of the boys varsity for the yearbook and web site.
- Greely Hockey Decals: Bowden reported Greely Hockey decals that
affix to the outside of cars will be sold at games for $2 apiece.
- Tax Cap Ramifications: Godin distributed information provided by
the MSAD 51 Board of Directors detailing a worst-case scenario if the tax-cap
referendum passed and the board decided to eliminate athletic funds. The middle
school and girls programs are self-funded and would not be affected. The high
school boys program faces a potential loss of $20,000 in district funding. Jeff
Daigle noted the tax cap would mean some challenges, but that no one knows what
the exact impact would be. Bowden noted the school board has assured the various
athletic programs that any cuts would be made equitably across the various
programs.
